Teaching Philosophy:

One of the habits that renowned author and educator Stephen Covey espoused was "begin with the end in mind." This is a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. At the beginning of any course, assignment, or activity, I reflect and also try and have my students reflect on what or where that particular course, assignment or activity will lead them to next, assuming they are successful. I have found that if I can clearly visualize what "success" looks like, I am much more likely to achieve it. Similarly, if students can articulate to themselves and to me what success looks like, then it first gives me a chance to help them refine or sharpen that vision, and second makes it much more likely that the student will achieve that success.

The principles of ability-based education were ingrained in me during my post-graduate training, and these are also a foundational component of my philosophy of teaching. In addition to beginning with the end in mind, I challenge students to demonstrate the appropriate or correct knowledge, skills and attitudes related to whatever course, assignment, or activity they are engaged in. If they have laid out to themselves and to me an appropriate vision of success, and yet they are not being successful, then I find that whatever is holding them back almost always boils down to a deficiency in their knowledge, skills and/or attitudes. As the teacher, it is my responsibility to help them identify which of these is deficient and then instruct, model, coach and/or facilitate in order to help them master that ability to achieve success.

"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." I have seen quotes like this attributed to several different people, but most notably Theodore Roosevelt. Time and again I have experienced how powerful and true these words are! It is so important that I put in time and effort in order to connect with and get to know my students. This serves to synergistically replace "their" success with "our" success.
